"I Need You To Trust Me, One Last Time" - 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning' Has Released Its Trailer And It Appears This Is The End Of The Road For The Franchise
Just last week, a report from the Hollywood Reporter claimed the heads at Paramount Studios were gunning to brand next year's 8th installment of the Mission Impossible franchise as the last dance. This comes on the heels of reports also stating the film's budget was nearing $400M after delays from covid and the actor's strike. In a way to drum up extra buzz and get everyone's ass to the theater they looked to let everyone know this would be it.
The report also claimed Tom Cruise was pushing back on the idea and wanted to keep going because he's a nutjob who never wants to stop playing Ethan Hunt. Understandable, but as a big fan of these movies I can't get enough of them. I'm not sure it's possible for me to ever get fatigue from watching Tom Cruise play this character. Everything since the second movie has been a blast. Fallout was my favorite action movie ever. Dead Reckoning was fantastic as well, but suffered at the box office because of a poorly timed release, going up against Barbie and Oppenheimer the following week. That's forced Paramount's hand and apparently gotten Tom Cruise to cave. Today we got the title to the May 2025 release - The Final Reckoning. Along with that we have a two minute trailer. Enjoy.
First of all, that's how you make a movie trailer. I don't know what's going to happen based on that two minute clip and that's a good thing! Some great action and cuts to callbacks from prior movies, mixed in with what characters are going to lead the way. Just gets you fired up for next May.
Now to the content of the trailer. Can't really see how you promote it as such and there's more Mission movies down the pipeline. We've reached the end of the road…most likely.
We got a glimpse at the updated team. Paris has officially turned to the good side after being spared by Ethan at the end of Dead Reckoning. Degas is there on her right, along with Benji and Grace. Need Shea Whigham's Briggs involved as well, but maybe he's been killed off by then. Is Luther still working as a ghost behind the scenes? We seem moments of him, but nothing with the group.
Speaking of Grace, really replacing Ilsa just like that? Goddamn the body isn't even cold yet.
I suppose we'll live.
This underwater rescue seems like a big moment. Too many people seem to think this is Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust back from the dead, but I don't see it at all. Let it go, I finally have. It was wrong, it was handled poorly, but she's moved on.
Right?
I have a feeling this submarine scene with the nukes aboard will be the film's final act. Would be cool if this was a misdirect and they handle this early, hiding the movie's actual climax.
The trailer had a few callbacks to previous movies in the franchise, one being the scene where Ethan steals the mysterious Rabbit's Foot in MI3. Do we actually get to find out what it is? Is the whole movie based around it? I must know what the Rabbit's Foot is after being rumored to be an "Anti-God Machine" by Benji.
The hell is Kittredge doing with Gabriel? I hope this is Kittredge being a double agent, can't have Gabriel kill Ilsa then decide he's a good guy.
All of it looks fucking incredible. This plane stunt is definitely bonkers and when we find out how Tom was just up there with no straps or harnesses it'll be hilarious.
May 23rd I'll be at an IMAX watching 62 year old Tom Cruise run around the world playing Ethan Hunt for the final time. I cannot wait.
